Distinguish Between Paper Cup Uses; Do Not Mix Hot And Cold Drinks.

Paper cups are widely used for serving food and beverages at gatherings, conferences, offices, dining services, and sporting or entertainment events; their hygiene and safety directly impact consumer well-being. The State Administration for Market Regulation recently issued a consumer advisory noting the uneven quality of paper cups currently on the market. Consumers are reminded to select cups appropriate for their intended use-specifically, not to use the same cup interchangeably for hot and cold drinks-and to look for the "QS" (Quality Safety) certification mark when purchasing.

First, consumers should purchase paper cups from reputable stores or supermarkets, prioritizing well-known brands and avoiding "three-no" products (products lacking a manufacturer name, address, or production license).

In accordance with regulations from the State Administration for Market Regulation, paper packaging containers intended for food use-including paper cups-must bear the "QS" mark to be sold legally. Beyond the "QS" mark, consumers should verify that product labeling is complete and legible. The cup or its packaging should clearly display information such as the product name, trademark, material, executive standard number, production date and shelf life (or batch number and expiration date), specifications (size, model, grade, quantity), conformity mark, usage precautions, manufacturer details (name, address, contact info), and production license number. It is best to avoid products with incomplete labeling, damaged packaging seals, or blurry printing.

Second, inspect the inner and outer surfaces, rim, and base of the cup for cleanliness, checking for stains, deformation, or mold, and ensuring uniform thickness. For cups with printed designs, the colors should be even, the outlines sharp, and there should be no obvious ink spots or blemishes. Regarding printing layout, observe the "15mm top/10mm bottom" rule: no printing should appear within 15mm of the rim or 10mm of the base. Avoid products with poor visual quality.

If possible, open the package and smell the cups to check for any unusual odors, paying particular attention to the scent of ink or mold. Do not purchase the product if any unpleasant odor is detected. If possible, inspect the cup under a fluorescent light; if a distinct blue fluorescence appears, exercise caution regarding its purchase or use. Wax-coated paper cups should not be used for hot beverages.

When using paper cups, follow the instructions on the packaging regarding the types of food or beverages they are designed to hold and the recommended temperature limits; do not heat them in a microwave oven.

It is particularly important to note that paper cups are unsuitable for alcoholic beverages, as alcohol's high permeability can easily cause leakage. They are also unsuitable for foods with temperatures exceeding 100°C (such as hot oil), as this can pose health risks to the user.

Select paper cups based on their intended use. Paper cups are categorized into types for cold drinks, hot drinks, and ice cream, each with specific temperature suitability. For instance, wax-coated cups are typically intended for cold drinks like cola; using them for hot beverages can cause the wax coating to melt and mix into the contents, compromising safety.

Most paper cups currently on the market are PE-coated (polyethylene film), featuring a coating on the inside only. While suitable for hot beverages, they are not recommended for cold drinks; cold contents can cause condensation to form on the exterior, leading to softening, reduced structural rigidity, and deformation of the cup.

Consume food or beverages stored in paper cups promptly to prevent spoilage caused by prolonged storage, which could affect consumer health. Once opened, paper cups should be resealed and stored in a well-ventilated, dry area protected from moisture, and they should be used as soon as possible within their shelf life.
