Inside IPACK's New Factory: How 100 Million Paper Cups A Year Are Made

Oct 22, 2026 Leave a message

The short answer: 100 million paper cups a year is not one machine running faster. It is 10,000 m² of floor, a 5,000 m² warehouse, 200+ people and seven machine groups in sequence, with inspection gates placed where a defect is still cheap to catch.

What does a 100-million-cup factory actually look like?

Wuhan XinYongAn Industry and Trade Co., Ltd., which exports as IPACK, has made food-grade disposable packaging since 2011. Its factory profile lists 10,000 m² of production space, a separate 5,000 m² warehouse, more than 200 employees and 100 million paper cups a year after older lines were replaced with automated equipment.

The number that matters is the 2:1 ratio of floor to warehouse, not the headline. Storage under the same roof is why a supplier can hold finished stock - and a 200,000-unit emergency buffer - instead of quoting a date and hoping.

How does a paper cup go from raw paper to a packed carton?

Seven equipment groups, in this order:

StageEquipmentWhat the stage decides
1. SlittingPaper slitting machineRoll width, edge quality, splices removed
2. PrintingFlexo printing machineColour and registration against artwork
3. Die-cuttingDie-cutting machineBlank dimensions, so seam and bottom fit
4. FormingHigh-speed forming machineSeam bond and bottom seal - the leak points
5. CurlingCurling machineRim roundness, which sets lid fit
6. GluingGluing machineBottom reinforcement, handle attachment
7. PackingAutomatic cup packing machineCounts per carton, rim protection

Printing happens before forming: a flat blank holds sharper registration, and the ink cures before the paper is rolled.

Where are the quality gates, and what do they catch?

Control points run from incoming material inspection to final checks - four gates in practice:

  • Incoming material. Paper and coating tested to FDA (US), EU 1935/2004 and LFGB (Germany), with SGS reports held per product.
  • First-off print. Colour signed off before the run continues, not after.
  • Seam and bottom. Leaking, separation and wicking start at these two joints, so they are checked as a pair.
  • Final inspection. Visual check plus performance test before cartons are sealed.

Compliance and certification differ. EU 1935/2004 sets safety and inertness requirements for food contact materials; FDA 21 CFR 176.170 covers paper and paperboard contacting aqueous and fatty foods. Neither certifies a factory - that belongs to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, BRC, BSCI and FSC, all of which the company lists.

What do 100 million cups a year mean for your order?

Less than most buyers assume. The figure is roughly 8.3 million cups a month, but output is shared across paper cups, bowls and food containers. Before treating plant capacity as your capacity, ask:

  1. What is the line allocation for my size and print? A plant can be busy at 8 oz and idle at 12 oz.
  2. What sits in finished stock? The 200,000-unit buffer is only useful if your SKU is in it.

Can you verify any of this before you place an order?

Four requests separate a real factory from a trading company:

  1. An SGS report covering your exact cup size and coating, not a generic one.
  2. Certificate numbers you can look up on the issuer's database, not scans.
  3. A live video walk of the line that will run your order, filmed on shift.
  4. A factory visit - the plant invites customers to come and see it.

For Gulf and wider MENA buyers, the next chance to do this in person is Gulf Print & Pack 2027, 12–14 January 2027, Dubai World Trade Centre. IPACK's stand number at the show is to be confirmed.

Frequently asked questions

How many paper cups does a Chinese paper cup factory produce per year?
It varies with plant size and mix. For reference, the published IPACK figure is 100 million cups a year from a 10,000 m² facility. Treat any supplier's number as a plant-wide total until it is broken down by SKU.

Which certifications should a paper cup manufacturer hold?
ISO 9001 plus a food-safety scheme such as BRC, and FSC if you make fibre-sourcing claims. Material compliance is separate: ask for test reports against FDA 21 CFR 176.170, EU 1935/2004 and, for Germany, LFGB.

Can I visit the factory before ordering?
Yes, visits are welcome, and a video walk of the line is a reasonable substitute if travel is not practical. Ask to see the QC station, not just the forming machines.

What is the minimum order quantity?
It depends on cup size, coating and whether the print is custom. Trial orders and bulk runs are both accepted; the exact MOQ for your specification is to be confirmed with the sales team.
